The summer of 2013 marks the 98th  year that the DiCosmo family has been making ices. And what a year! More on that later.

New Jersey-  We are happy to say that the flagship ice shack in Elizabeth is now open for the season. Daily hours are approximately 12-6pm for the month of May, or at least until the temperature on 4th Ave hits the mid 70′s. Don’t even bother trying to get an ice there on a rainy day.  If you’ve never been to the little green landmark DiCosmo’s Italian Ice shack at the corner of 4th Avenue and High Street  in the Peterstown neighborhood, then you need to put it on your shortlist. If you’ve been coming for years, thank you!

New York- DiCosmo’s Rockaway is planning to reopen at the B. 96 St. shack for Memorial Day weekend.  We are celebrating our 5th year in business in Rockaway Beach by rebuilding! Like our neighbors and friends on the peninsula, we sustained major damage on our house and lost most of our equipment at our storefronts. But like Lou Reed said, “what comes is better than what came before.”  We look forward to another summer in the shack,  sandwiched between  friends at Veggie Island and Rockaway Taco.

As for our ice barrels and frozen yogurt at the B.97  boardwalk concession stand, we are waiting on the green light from the landlord.

Firstly, thank you for an amazing summer of 2012. It was our strongest season yet and a lot of fun.

Secondly, we too got devastated by the storm. Our house, ice and fro-yo equipment, and the concession stand itself were all banged up. Our friend and DiCosmo’s employee Roberto lost everything, but has landed on his feet.

Thank you to everyone who helped us dig out our house and business (Jade, Jon, Dan from Bellweather, Robert Wagner, Ernesto Palladin, and many others).

While the future of DiCosmo’s Ices in Rockaway remains uncertain, we are grateful for the present.

School’s out, summer is really here! The streets are hot, the suburbs are hot, the city is hot, and even the beach…is cool!

Here’s an update:

In New Jersey, the ‘Festa di San Vito’ aka st.vito’s feast, in Elizabeth, was a huge success. There is construction at the west end of 4th Avenue (until August!) but don’t be discouraged. Follow the detour around the block…ices are your reward. FYI: the stand is open from about 12-8 daily, unless the weather is questionable.

In New York: The ice cart is on the boardwalk on weekends, and our two spots (next to Rockaway Taco and at the Beach 97 concession stand) are open daily. Fun flavors are being rolled out daily.
